Judy Lake promises that “every lampshade has a story.” From her homey Lake’s Lampshades shop in Pawlet, the textile artist (pictured at left, with her Australian shepherd, Odie) creates one-of-a-kind lampshades made from vintage fabric. As an art student, Judy found herself drawn to antique textiles and making collages. Creating lampshades combines both her passions. For 17 years she has been finding fabric, matching materials, and hand-crafting lampshades. “I’ve always loved going to flea markets,” confesses Judy, “and luckily my business allows me to support my addiction.” Antique tablecloths, curtains, bedspreads, kitchen linens, and vintage clothing fill the shelves and racks in Judy’s shop. Lampshades range from flowery tops trimmed with tassels to subtle chenille pieces edged with pom-poms. Judy uses antique lamp bases to complement the vintage trimmed shades. Local customers will even bring in their own antique fabric for custom-made shades. Lake’s Lampshades, (802) 325-6308; 60 School St., Pawlet, VT 05761; www.lakeslampshades.com.
